Oil and gas operations management (15 credits)
In this module you learn how operations management techniques improve the performance of oil and gas supply chains in a highly competitive global marketplace. It introduces modelling tools such as Supply Chain Guru, which can be used to assess the impact of alternative operations management techniques. You have the opportunity to experience SAP software and understand its applications in planning and control.
Oil and gas case studies (15 credits)
With support from the oil and gas industry, this module provides opportunities to examine real-world case studies in relation to the management, IT and technology of oil and gas supply chains. You critically review case studies to identify how various technologies and methodologies are deployed to improve the overall performance of oil and gas supply chains.
Introduction to GIS (Geographical Information Systems) (15 credits)
The module introduces the fundamental principles underpinning the use of GIS. You gain practical skills in GIS using MapInfo, a leading GIS software platform. You have the opportunity to produce work of a professional standard that enhances subject understanding for a range of audiences and draws on current research and academic publications.
Environment perspectives and policy development (15 credits)
In this module you explore the conceptual and historical background to contemporary environmental management concerns, and critically evaluate a range of environmental policies in order to understand the challenges of policy implementation in the environmental sector.
Finance and marketing (15 credits)
You undertake a market evaluation for an external organisation in real time and under current market conditions by applying the theoretical and conceptual knowledge gained during the module. This enables you to understand and evaluate different marketing and financial tools and critique their merits, defects and limitations in the development of a research task.
Management of strategy change and innovation (15 credits)
This module enables you to appreciate the nature and significance of strategic management, change and innovation by introducing concepts, theories, models and frameworks which support a manager in thinking and working strategically. You also analyse, compare, criticise and evaluate different theoretical ideas and assumptions.
Durability of engineering materials (15 credits)
This module introduces the fundamentals of corrosion and erosion-corrosion processes, how these affect the performance of materials used by the oil and gas industries, and how the negative effects of these two processes can be prevented. It also introduces various innovative techniques and theories currently available that facilitate material selection for oil and gas application.
Applied fatigue and fracture mechanics (15 credits)
In this module, you learn about fatigue and fracture mechanics and their application to structural design and safety assessment of components and structures employed in the oil and gas industry. You develop your understanding of the effect of defects (cracks, notches and corrosion pits) on the safe working life under fluctuating applied stresses. This module is supported by state-of-art structural integrity laboratories and modern design tools and software.
Dissertation (60 Credits)
You undertake an independent piece of research relating to oil and gas management, then produce a dissertation based on this work. It is an academically rigorous, motivating and integrating element of the course based on a self-generated research project. You produce a substantial piece of work which demonstrates your subject-related and communication skills appropriate to masters level.
