King's College London, MA, Contemporary Worship

 United Kingdom
The compulsory module: Patterns in contemporary worship; the module offers theoretical frameworks for understanding developments in contemporary worship; it sets contemporary patterns of worship within the context of wider cultural change; theoretical approaches are developed drawing upon the understanding of cultural change in modernity to theorise the contemporary worship scene as a specifically Christian postmodern moment; this leads on to sessions that deal with the changing nature of worship within specific ecclesial contexts and traditions; emphasis is upon studying worship as it is practiced drawing upon recent empirical research as well as published liturgical texts; students take 1 other compulsory module: theology in practice; this core module links all the programmes on the Master's programme; it equips students with theological tools that help them to analyse the styles and the purposes of Christian ministry; with these tools (including disciplines of social science with their empirical research methodologies; historical enquiry; and scriptural interpretation) students are in a position to articulate a theology of ministry, and to formulate methodologies for understanding and interpreting their contexts and their actions as ministers; in addition to the dissertation, students then take 2 further modules from the following: church, mission and society; educational issues in Christian ministry; ethical issues in pastoral ministry; ministry in the Bible; patterns in contemporary ecclesiology; patterns in contemporary worship; patterns in youth ministry; philosophy and postmodern culture; reformation, revival and revolution: models of ministry 1547-2000; the pastoral use of the Bible; theology, church and worship.

Location

London’s most central university, with four river-side campuses in a single square mile in the heart of London. The campuses are located either side of the Thames – Strand, Waterloo, Guy’s and further south, Denmark Hill. The college is associated with four great hospitals of Guy's and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and the Maudsley.

The Faculty's London-based departments are at the Strand and Waterloo campuses. Most buildings at the Strand Campus overlook the Thames, midway between the Houses of Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, next door to Somerset House and the Courtauld Institute of Art, close to the Royal Courts of Justice. Within five minutes' walk of the Strand are Covent Garden, many West End theatres, and Trafalgar Square, home to the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery.

The Waterloo Campus is next to London's South Bank arts and cultural quarter which includes the National Film Theatre and BFI Southbank, the Royal Festival Hall, the Hayward Gallery and the National Theatre. Three minutes walk away is Waterloo Station.
