Edge Hill University, BA (Hons), Physical Education and School Sport
In the 1st year, the student follows a foundation year programme; to provide the student with a secure grounding in many different aspects of sport and physical activity, modules introduce: social and management aspects of sport; fundamental sport and exercise disciplines and principles; practical performance enhancement opportunities across a range of sports and activities; academic and personal development through the acquisition of key vocational and transferable skills; this provides both a broad foundation in the study of sport, physical activity and physical education and some flexibility of movement between courses at the end of year 1; in years 2 and 3 the student follows dedicated physical education modules which include: safeguarding children in sport and physical education; the analysis of movement; the physiological components of human performance; the history and development of physical education; expressive movement introduces dance and gym as areas of activity, each with its own philosophy and required skills; the physical education module covers the practice of physical education across the key stages in the national curriculum (NCPE); year 3 includes a dissertation, building on the student’s research skills and subject specific knowledge; it involves the gathering of information in real settings and enhances the student’s knowledge of an aspect of physical education that is of particular interest to them; the student also studies child development, physical education and the community, and the social, political, economic and cultural influences on physical education.
