Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the UK’s most internationally distinguished universities. Ranked in the World’s Top 200 Universities, it boasts a student population of around 16,000 and a large international community of students and staff drawn from over 120 different countries. Located in one of the most dynamic, prosperous and beautiful regions of the UK, Aberdeen truly has something for everyone – from the bustling city centre of Europe’s energy capital to the superb and dramatic countryside and coastline in an area rich in historic and natural interest. Moreover, the city of Aberdeen is consistently hailed as one of the safest in the UK.
HISTORY AND EXCELLENCE
The University of Aberdeen is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the fifth oldest in the UK. Here, the 15th century remains very much alive, bringing a genuine sense of history to the daily life of a university firmly focused on the needs of the new millennium. Five Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work either completed or initiated at the University of Aberdeen, and our international reputation bears testament to a long tradition of excellence and innovation. Learning resources for students on our beautiful campus are first-class. At Aberdeen you will find ancient buildings side by side with modern, newly refurbished laboratories, excellent computing facilities and the latest library technology.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
As part of our £270 million investment into infrastructure, our campus now has wireless internet access throughout all buildings across the University campus. In 2009, the first phase of a new £28 million flagship sports facility opened. These first-class, international-standard sports facilities, backed up with an array of excellent services, provide the ideal venue for a range of activities, available to all students, at all levels.
Facilities in the Sports Village include a full size FIFA-approved indoor football pitch, indoor and outdoor athletics areas, a floodlit hockey pitch, state of the art gymnasium, and squash courts.
The second phase will come in 2014 when we open the Aquatic Centre, which will give Aberdeen international-league water sports status for the first time. It will include a 10 lane 50m pool, diving facilities and spectator seating for 600 people.
Furthermore, in 2011, our brand new and magnificent £57 million library - hailed as a major intellectual and cultural learning centre for the 21st century - opened its doors. This unique landmark combines a flexible, functional space of the highest quality for students, academics and researchers, with environmentally controlled facilities to preserve, showcase, and maximise the research potential of our historic collections, opening them up to a far wider audience than has been possible to date.
