Studying

There are three academic terms in each academic year and the main dates are arranged as following:

What When
Aston Welcome Week last week of September
First Term beginning of October to mid of December
Second Term beginning of January to end of March
Third Term mid of April till beginning of June

The in-class time for a degree programme varies depending on the subject being studied. All programmes at Aston University require the student to carry out independent learning. Formal contact (such as lectures and seminars,) is only part of the teaching and learning structure. You will be expected to study independently in addition to timetabled teaching, (usually for twice as long as they spend in class).

Student life and clubs

Aston University is a lively, diverse, close-knit community. It’s difficult to walk across campus without bumping into someone you know! You’ll find all you need at Aston – great academic, support and social facilities, and plentiful accommodation all on campus with a guarantee scheme for international students. And when it comes to nightlife, you'll be spoilt for choice, both on campus and 5 minutes walk in the centre of Birmingham.
Being a relatively small university it’s very easy to become involved in clubs and societies, all of which are run by students for students. With around 80 to choose from you’re bound to find a club or society to suit you, and if you can't, you can set one up!

Accommodation

University on-campus accommodation offers more than 2,300 places. Catered meal plan options available. Students’ Guild support in finding private sector accommodation.

Campus

  • there are 1,100 computer workstations on campus, some of which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week;
  • the library is now open 24 hours a day at key times of the year and contains over 300,000 volumes and a new learning development centre

Aston University is less than five minutes walk from Birmingham city centre and its many shops, restaurants, galleries, theatres, cinemas, pubs and clubs.

Location and transport

The Aston University campus is located on a green 60 acre, self contained site in the centre of Birmingham, within 5-10 minutes walk of the main shopping, business and entertainment areas of the city. And it is within a 20-minute journey by rail to Birmingham International Airport.
