The Spanish course emphasises practical communication skills using written, audio and visual materials developed by university staff, as well as commercially available courses; our Spanish foreign language assistants prove invaluable to students in the improvement of their speaking and listening skills; the course provides the opportunity for a year or semester overseas, which can be spent studying at a university (in Barcelona, Granada, Málaga and Santiago de Compostela amongst others), in a work placement, or as a foreign language assistant in a secondary school; the nature of the English language course means students can choose to pursue a variety of themes and to develop diverse skills; they can gain hands on experience in creative writing, if they wish, or can carry out field research in language, taping people's speech or using the internet to gather data to analyse; the course allows students to study the ways language is used in a range of real life situations: from the writings and broadcasts of the mass media to web based texts and informal conversations; it enables students to appreciate the sheer variety of types of English, including regional accents and dialects (including the Black Country dialect), international varieties (American English and Indian English, for example), and class and gender differences.
