Linguistics: The 'core' or compulsory modules provide students with the analytical tools and concepts that are essential for anyone studying human language, while the optional modules give students the chance to specialise in different areas of the subject: language acquisition, historical linguistics, or the study of language in its social and cultural contexts; students can also choose a limited number of options from outside the department. Japanese: Students acquire a good grounding in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in small-group teaching; optional modules at level 2 cover aspects of Japanese society, history and culture; students spend their 3rd year overseas at 1 of the partner universities in Japan; this provides students with an excellent opportunity to enhance their language skills and to immerse themselves in Japanese society.
