The course focuses primarily on contemporary Japan, and offers postgraduate supervision in such areas as Japanese religion, society, popular culture and history, through a variety of methodologies, such as anthropological, sociological, textual and cultural studies approaches; research specialisms include: Contemporary religious dynamics in Japan; new religious movements; pilgrimage; religion and violence; religion and the media; religion, law and politics; religion, commercialisation and commodification; sociology of religion; Japanese popular culture and society.
