This is a joint Honours programme which allows the student to study 2 subjects in equal proportions; the discipline of education studies draws upon philosophy, sociology, history and psychology to critically examine educational decision making in an attempt to understand contemporary change and persistent trends; education studies is concerned with understanding how people develop and learn throughout their lives and is the study of educational processes and the cultural, political and historical contexts in which they are embedded; modern geography is so much more than the study of places and capital cities; it is about the dynamic interplay of processes that shape the world and its peoples, encompassing everything from the surface and subsurface processes that model the physical landscape, to the social, economic, cultural and political forces that mould the societies in which people live; the field techniques of the modern geographer range from long-established tools, such as tape measure and compass, questionnaire and clipboard, to devices that are at the cutting edge of information technology, such as the digital camera, hand held Global Positioning System (GPS) and iPod; all this ensures that the knowledge and skills of the geographer continue to be of relevance to today’s employment needs, and makes geography a popular degree with a wide range of employers; the geography course is designed to give the student a balanced experience of the subject, while offering the opportunity for specialist degree training in aspects of physical and/or human geography and geographic information systems (GIS) by combining geography with another subject under the combined Honours programme.

Location

Chester is a modern and contemporary city, rich in history and culture. One of eight world-famous British Heritage cities, Chester welcomes over eight million tourists each year with a wide variety of attractions. Ideally placed in the North West of England, it is less than an hour from Manchester and Liverpool, just a two-hour direct train journey to London and close to both the beautiful Welsh coast and mountains. The ancient Roman walls still surround Chester’s city centre, which along with the renowned Cathedral, Eastgate Clock, and Roman Amphitheatre, demonstrate its 2000-year-old heritage.

  • Second most student-friendly city in the UK (The Sun 2019)
  • Top ten city in the UK (The Telegraph 2018)
  • Safest city-based University in North West England (The Complete University Guide 2018)
