This course interrogates modern American culture and its transmission and influence from a trans-national perspective; this analysis is primarily undertaken through the medium of film; issues covered include: the impact of international influences on American film; how an examination of key reciprocal relationships between the hollywood tradition and other national cinemas have shaped the development of film in a global context; an investigation into how films reflect fundamental political features of America’s relationship with various regions of the world: Europe, the Middle East and the Far East; an exploration of the processes, controversies and implications involved in the adaptation of foreign literary works for the American screen and vice versa; an analysis of the ideological features of American film in a global cultural environment.
