The television production scheme allows students to achieve a solid foundation in television production necessary for a career in the broadcasting industry; the scheme allows students to gain a general grounding in the subject and then to continue as an all-rounder or, in their final year, to pursue 1 of a range of specialist pathways; television production has been transformed by new technology, especially in the area of digital editing; the editing pathway highlights the creative importance of the role of the editor as storyteller in film and television and is a direct response to the needs of industry; tuition spans technical and aesthetic learning as well as an overview of editing in the historical development of both film and television genres. Modules Students establish and develop their technical abilities and creative preferences; the skills students encounter include: directing; producing; research; camera principles; sound mixing; lighting and design; studio techniques; digital post-production; after a common year and a 1/2, students have the opportunity specialise in a range of specialisms; there is a strong emphasis on real-world practice and students learn alongside experienced professionals from the television industry, working in teams to make programmes in both factual and fiction genres including documentary, drama, current affairs and entertainment; in parallel to the practice-based work, students address key theoretical issues around the historical context of television and the changing economic, social and cultural elements that define it; throughout the course all students are expected to spend time on industry-based placements and they collaborate with writers and performers from across other courses to produce the best practical work possible.
