Study mode Start date Duration
Full-time n/a years: 3
The course is built around the theme of industrial processing of high-performance functional and structural materials; the course provides a sound background in process engineering, supplemented with a materials engineering content focusing on the design of high-performance functional and structural materials; students learn about the design of materials with specific shape and properties for a particular application and the development of nano-materials and structures for high-value speciality applications; the course enables graduates to assist in the development of the next generation of materials and products; stage 1 is common with the Chemical Engineering BEng and MEng degree programmes; MEng students: in Stages 2, 3 and 4, you focus either on materials for functional and structural applications or on materials applications in the chemical industries. You learn about synthesis of materials, evaluation of material properties as well as modelling and data analysis as part of materials design; students carry out a research project in stage 4 related to material design and or processing; BEng students: at the end of stage 2, you may choose to spend a paid year in industry before continuing with stage 3; if students pass stage 2 examinations with Merit, they may transfer to the MEng for the final two years of that degree; in stages 2 and 3, you take modules covering polymer science and engineering as well as structural and analytical techniques for measuring material properties; students also learn about materials processing; in addition students carry out a plant design, which draws together all your previous theoretical and practical knowledge and counts for about a third of your study time in the final year.
