This course is designed to provide the crafts, technical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for the conservation and re-establishment of works of art and artefacts made of wood and stone; students choose a programme of study tailored to their needs drawn from units covering the history of architecture and architectural decoration, and the science of cleaning and conservation, carving in wood and stone, gilding and the conservation of a variety of polychrome finishes; conservation is set within an appropriate historical and social background in order to provide the right context within which the practical work is undertaken; students work under the supervision of professional conservators and, in their final year, undertake practical work on historic objects; a dissertation reflecting historical, technical and practical research.
