Year 1 offers an introduction to the main concepts of statistics. Students learn how to analyse simple data sets and to apply probability in simple situations. It will also introduce the basic ideas of operational research (OR). Year 2 investigates applied statistics in more depth, as well as some of the most standard basic OR techniques such as linear programming and network analysis. The applied statistics modules extend the first year studies in statistics, exploring techniques for analysing results from experiments and surveys. Particular emphasis is placed on interpreting results and the use of a variety of statistical computer packages, rather than concentrating on the theoretical proofs of statistical ideas. Students can undertake a work placement in their third year if they wish, or may go straight on to the final year where they will explore multivariate techniques. Students might also examine more advanced OR techniques, and undertake a supervised research project.
