This course gives students the ability to tackle situations that materials scientists and engineers encounter on an everyday basis; they learn how to tailor the properties of materials to meet design requirements, using an understanding of their structure, composition and processing and gaining experience in both materials and management issues; the course's incorporates business modules at each year of study, as well as case studies, design projects, group industrial projects, laboratory work, manufacturing plant visits and tutorials; these give students the management skills needed in the organisation of a production or processing plant or the running of research and development projects; the course also aims to give students a sound knowledge and understanding of Japanese language and culture, as well as the intellectual and professional skills needed to contribute to this major business market; an integral feature of the course is the unique opportunity to spend a year in Japan working in industry and at a research institute.
