Linguistics: The 'core' or compulsory modules provide students with the analytical tools and concepts that are essential for anyone studying human language, while the optional modules give students the chance to specialise in different areas of the subject: language acquisition, historical linguistics, or the study of language in its social and cultural contexts; students can also choose a limited number of options from outside the department. Russian: This course focuses on small-group teaching, and students are taught by internationally renowned experts in their field; beginners and post-A level students follow separate Russian language courses tailored to their levels for 2 full years; the core programme in Russian culture and civilization complements language instruction at each level; students study up to three Slavonic languages and spend at least one semester in Russia during their year abroad.
