On this course students' take 3 years of language classes and lecture-based modules in Sheffield; the 3rd year abroad is at a partner university in East Asia, with at least 1 semester being spent in Russia; specialised non language options include modern history, contemporary society, business, economics, population and environment, and identity; the core modules for the Japanese programme cover East Asia as a whole, and students may also take any of the single-country modules offered by the School; though they are encouraged to take either an East Asian language option or modules in a subject such as politics, economics or sociology. Russian: This course focuses on small-group teaching, and students are taught by internationally renowned experts in their field; beginners and post-A level students follow separate Russian language courses tailored to their levels for 2 full years; the core programme in Russian culture and civilization complements language instruction at each level; students study up to three Slavonic languages and spend at least one semester in Russia during their year abroad.
