In this degrees students take 3 years of language classes and lecture-based modules in Sheffield, and 1 year of intensive language study at a partner university in East Asia; specialised non language options include modern history, contemporary society, business, economics, population and environment, and identity; the core modules for the programme cover East Asia as a whole, and students may also take any of the single country modules offered by the school and are encouraged to take either an East Asian language option or modules in a subject such as politics, economics or sociology; language classes are small, and students use the target language and script from day 1; the 1st year of language study covers all skills, from reading and writing to speaking and listening; later, the focus shifts to more advanced and vocational skills in writing, summary, translation, debate and oral presentation; the year abroad is a great opportunity for students to expand their language skills and understanding of local society and culture. German studies include oral, written and grammar, as well as an introduction to contemporary German society and German writing with its historical and literary contexts. There are also a variety of options to choose from.
