A 3rd of teaching time is devoted to developing students’ written and oral fluency in Spanish, supported by language laboratory, video and satellite TV facilities and regular classes with native-speakers; level 1 provides a grounding in the language, culture, history and society of Spain and Latin America; suitably qualified dual Honours students can also take Portuguese or Catalan; levels 2 and 3 allow students to plan their work to suit their particular interests, offering a broad coverage of Spanish and Latin American culture, history and society; level 3 also includes practically-based modules on interpreting, translating, and teaching. Japanese: As the minor subject on this degree, Japanese is taught less intensively than Spanish; students acquire a good grounding in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in small-group teaching; optional modules at level 2 cover aspects of Japanese society, history and culture; during the students’ year abroad in a Spanish speaking country they continue their study of Japanese by attending university courses or completing an approved programme of study in Japanese.
