Acquiring a high standard of oral and written fluency is central to all levels of the course; at level 1 the programme introduces students to French society and culture from the medieval period to the present day, including film studies, and to modern French history and institutions; further specialist options in these areas are taught at level 2; at level 3 students spend the whole year in France, usually either as a language assistant in a school or studying at university; places are also available at the University of London Institute in Paris in association with the renowned Institut d'Etudes Politiques; Japanese: As the minor subject on this degree, Japanese is taught non-intensively on this degree course; students acquire a good grounding in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in small-group teaching.
