Acquiring a high standard of oral and written fluency is central to all levels of the course; at level 1 the programme introduces students to French society and culture from the medieval period to the present day, including film studies, and to modern French history and institutions; further specialist options in these areas are taught at level 2; at level 3 students spend the whole year in France, usually either as a language assistant in a school or studying at university; places are also available at the University of London Institute in Paris in association with the renowned Institute d'Etudes Politiques; also dual Honours students spend approximately five months at a specified university in each country.Czech: A third of the students’ time is spent taking modules in Czech, where they are taught by members of permanent staff and native-speaker lectors; students follow a course in Czech language and history at level 1; at level 2, students take a language course designed to prepare them for the year abroad, and a module devoted to Czech culture and literature; following the year abroad, students take a module called 'varieties of written and spoken Czech', which builds on skills developed in-country; students also undertake a larger-scale project in Czech studies involving substantial reading in the language.
