The course covers in chronological order the writing from the Renaissance to today, offering a grounding in the unfolding development of English literature; there are also courses on Drama and Film on offer, and a range of optional modules; of the five level one modules, two are compulsory: introduction to advanced literary studies (IALS) and the Renaissance; IALS is designed to make students rethink the study of poetry, narrative, drama, film and literary theory; Renaissance drama considers the dynamic period of Shakespeare; 3 optional modules concern drama, film studies and literary practice; at levels 2 and 3, the chronological survey continues over 5 modules, modules dedicated to literary theory and optional modules that might focus on a single author, genre or theme, a literary movement, or on practical drama or film; most reflect their tutors' research interests, such as Henry James, Irish literature, the gay novel, twentieth-century poetry, working-class writing, the Holocaust or Shakespeare on screen.RussianThis course focuses on small-group teaching, and students are taught by internationally renowned experts in their field; beginners and post-A level students follow separate Russian language courses tailored to their levels for 2 full years; the core programme in Russian culture and civilization complements language instruction at each level; students study up to three Slavonic languages and spend at least one semester in Russia during their year abroad.
