Biblical Studies: This is a flexible programme that allows students to study the ancient civilizations that contributed to the development of the Bible and their languages, including Hebrew and Greek, alongside the use of the Bible in contemporary society, including politics, art, film, literature, and music; in year 2 students may take a semester at 1 of our partner departments abroad. English: The course covers in chronological order the writing from the Renaissance to today, offering a grounding in the unfolding development of English literature; there are also courses on Drama and Film on offer, and a range of optional modules; of the 5 level 1 modules, 2 are compulsory: introduction to advanced literary studies (IALS) and the Renaissance; IALS is designed to make students rethink the study of poetry, narrative, drama, film and literary theory; Renaissance drama considers the dynamic period of Shakespeare; 3 optional modules concern drama, film studies and literary practice; at levels 2 and 3, the chronological survey continues over 5 modules, modules dedicated to literary theory and optional modules that might focus on a single author, genre or theme, a literary movement, or on practical drama or film; most reflect their tutors' research interests, such as Henry James, Irish literature, the gay novel, 20th-century poetry, working-class writing, the Holocaust or Shakespeare on screen; dual Honours students take half their modules in Biblical Studies and half in English.
