The course covers the languages, literatures and history of Spain, Portugal and Latin America; Liverpool is one of the few UK universities able to offer Catalan, Galician and Portuguese from scratch, which makes our single honours course more diverse and stimulating than many; furthermore, we have a large amount of expertise in Latin American Studies which will add further depth and breadth to your degree; not only will you become a confident reader, writer and speaker of Spanish, students also gain a thorough understanding of many aspects of Hispanic studies; each year students take modules in Spanish language, plus further modules in either Portuguese or Catalan which students learn from scratch; in the first year students also take foundational modules which concentrate on Iberian and Latin American history, languages in the Hispanic world and migration and transnational identities; in the 2nd and final years students complement their study of Spanish and Catalan or Portuguese by choosing from a wide range of modules; these include options on Medieval Spanish culture, Latin American literature, Galician studies, Brazilian, Latin American and Spanish cinema, Mexican fiction, the modern Spanish novel and linguistics; students spend 1 year in a Spanish-speaking country as an assistant in a school, as a student at a university or on a work placement; students have links with universities in Alcalá de Henares, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Oviedo, Porto and Valencia; Spanish students have recently worked at Bosch (Spain), Samsonite, RBS as well as in language schools and translation agencies; placements have also been undertaken in Spain as part of the European voluntary service; during this year, you will complete an extended essay in Spanish or follow courses at your chosen university.
