The course is designed to provide students with the principles of military vehicle technology; it pays special attention to: the study of advances in vehicle technology; developing skills in the analysis and evaluation of new concepts against changes and developments in the threat; the user requirements needed to meet the changing threat; the course aims to cover all technological aspects of military fighting and logistic vehicles in depth, yet offers a degree of choice and specialisation to students having differing backgrounds, interests, or requirements, eg those of individual sponsors; 6 are core modules designed to give a balanced, broad coverage of the whole vehicle and its sub-systems; these are supplemented by 6 specialised or advanced modules, 2 of which are optional to enable individual students to expand their expertise in areas particular to their own interests and those of their sponsors; the modular teaching programme culminates in an integrating fighting vehicle and weapon systems study; this draws together the material taught in the preceding modules and considers the design of the whole vehicle system and the trade-offs and compromises necessary to achieve the optimum operational performance and reliability at a realistic cost; a visit programme to vehicle and sub-system manufacturers and military units, supplements the academic instruction; the taught part of the course is complemented by an individual project aimed to develop the student’s expertise in engineering research, design or development in the field of military vehicle technology.
