The research theme focuses on all aspects of processes, design and product engineering involving fluids and particles, from the fundamentals of how fluid and particle systems respond to forces, to the advanced engineering of multiphase flow in petrochemicals and chemical products; expertise ranges from the microscopic scale (colloidal particles in foods and other ‘everyday’ products); to the industrial scale of oil and gas extraction; ongoing projects range from transportation of dust and particulates in mining; to separation of particles using advanced magnetic levitation and vibration techniques; to the fundamentals of ‘jamming’ in particle suspensions; to the use of electrical capacitance tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and advanced computer simulation to relate the basics of fluid and particle flow to the key engineering parameters that determine the efficiency of industrial processes and the usefulness of advanced products and technologies.
