The programme has a close link between disciplines in research through the Institute of Biophysics, Imaging and Optical Science which incorporates researchers from the School of Biology and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; the course prepares physical scientists, life scientists and engineers to work in the rapidly expanding disciplines of biophotonics and imaging; those with a background in the biological sciences emphasis is placed on the quantitative methods that now play a crucial role in the development of biology; students with previous experience in engineering or physics are tutored in the challenges of working at the interface with biology; students gain training in optical science and technology and cell biology with different emphasis depending on their background; they develop key skills enabling them to communicate with researchers in other disciplines; students conduct a research project.
