The sociology course is designed around core modules in sociological theory and research methods and provides opportunities for community and experience based learning in each year; initially, students study a broad introduction to sociology, allowing them to examine key concepts and methods, and develop a range of practical skills; students then investigate the wider applications of sociology in a broad range of contemporary social contexts and, with the support of a supervisor, explore a topic of their choice through a research project; the deaf studies course equips students to analyse a wide range of issues associated with deafness and the D/deaf community; it allows students to study British Sign Language (BSL) alongside cultural, historical and social issues relating to deafness; students improve their English and BSL communication skills, in class, self study tasks, assignments and debates; students also get the chance to investigate legislation, sign linguistics and language development.
