Politics is a subject which helps us to understand important global phenomenon including recent events like the war on terror and the impact of the international economic crisis; taught by experts in their field, this course allows students to investigate the institutions, processes and procedures through which interests are expressed, the theories we use in understanding political activity, and the factors motivating and legitimising it; the course is wide ranging and allows students to consider topics such as British politics, the politics of the Northern Ireland conflict, and American and European politics; the philosophy course prepares students to reason rigorously, critically, creatively and autonomously about key concepts underlying most human enquiry concerning the nature of reality, value and experience; students investigate a range of concepts from the nature of goodness, duty and rights, through grasping the nature of free will, consciousness, relation of mind and body, the difference between belief, opinion and knowledge, to the importance of gender in understanding identity; students learn to apply philosophical skills and techniques to practical reasoning in an imaginative way.
