The philosophy course prepares students to reason rigorously, critically, creatively and autonomously about key concepts underlying most human enquiry concerning the nature of reality, value and experience; students investigate a range of concepts from the nature of goodness, duty and rights, through grasping the nature of free will, consciousness, relation of mind and body, the difference between belief, opinion and knowledge, to the importance of gender in understanding identity; students learn to apply philosophical skills and techniques to practical reasoning in an imaginative way; the sociology course is designed around core modules in sociological theory and research methods and provides opportunities for community and experience based learning in each year; initially, students study a broad introduction to sociology, allowing them to examine key concepts and methods, and develop a range of practical skills; students then investigate the wider applications of sociology in a broad range of contemporary social contexts and, with the support of a supervisor, explore a topic of their choice through a research project.
