“The department is great, fantastic vibe with its own social environment. The teaching staff are friendly and fun and the qualification at the end is your ticket to a great career.”
- David Stead

This course combines degree level learning of French, Spanish or Japanese language with the study of translation issues and media in today’s fast-changing world. You can begin your degree-level study if you have A level or GCSE in these languages. For Japanese or Spanish you can also start from beginners level. We welcome native speakers of French or Spanish on to this programme.

The right course for you

Whether you are studying French, Spanish or Japanese, our courses allow you to develop your languages skills at the same time as discovering the societies and cultures in which those languages are spoken.

You can choose to study two languages in combination, develop your interests in translation and interpreting, or opt for a joint degree in areas such as management studies, international development or film and television.

Study abroad

Studying languages at UEA means spending time studying abroad, immersed in the language and culture that you’re studying. If you choose a four-year degree, your entire third year will be spent abroad, while for three-year degrees it is one semester in your second year.

You can explore one or more countries and the opportunities they offer. Many of our students take up a teaching assistantship, work placement or voluntary role, while others attend a foreign university. Spend time discovering France, Spain, parts of Latin America, the French West Indies, Africa and Japan.
