This course based in a mechanical engineering context, and the materials content is oriented towards supporting and extending this; the University’s own research activities exploit the synergy between materials, manufacturing and design, and this programme has been constructed on that basis; the availability of new materials and the design of these to meet specific requirements is one of the major driving forces in the development of both products and manufacturing processes; modules have been developed in consultation with leading companies such as BP, CEL International, Dunlop, GKN, ICI, IMI, Rio Tinto, Unilever and Westland Helicopters; building on the fundamental engineering covered in stages 1 and 2 (see below), stages 3 and 4 specialise in the study of materials; modules cover a range of topics from fundamental materials science to applications, such as manufacturing technology, design that takes manufacturing into account, quality assurance and product liability, joining technology, materials and tribology, sustainable materials processing, advanced materials and processes, reliability and lifetime prediction, and stress analysis; project work in these stages develops students’ understanding of the interaction between engineering, manufacturing and materials science.
