 United Kingdom

Study mode Start date Duration
Full-time September years: 1
Part-time September years: 2

The programme enables students to engage in, and experiment with, practical game design; students explore a range of theories and concepts with which to analyse the various values of games, play and pleasure, and go back to 'basics' by considering what it is that makes for 'good' game play; different types of games are explored with the aim of developing designs that are both innovative and that might appeal beyond the current core markets for digital games; students are taught by a team of experienced games researchers.

Special features

  • Students will engage in, and experiment with, practical games creation, with workshops led by designers working in the industry, as well as explore a range of theories and concepts with which to analyse the values of games, play and pleasure.
  • This programme offers a unique focus on practical games design, informed by theory that is not offered by any other university. It is not a software or graphics training programme.
  • We have a team of experienced games researchers teaching on the programme, some of whom have played a pioneering role in making game studies a new academic discipline.

Location

The University is just a 20-minute walk – or a short bus ride – from Uxbridge underground station, so it is a straightforward journey into central London. There is also a night bus that can bring you from central London to the edge of the campus. The town of Uxbridge itself, which still has buildings dating back to its time as a Georgian market town, is a thriving commercial and business centre. Its major shopping complexes, The Pavilions and the Chimes Centre, boast a wide range of shops, cafes and a nine-screen multiplex cinema.
