Higher Education quality standards are among the highest in the world. As a part of the efforts to achieve this result, statistical data are thoroughly collected and analysed.

Below we provide a list of main information and data providers for Higher Education sector in the UK.

In reality there are much more organisations dealing with the data collection and analysis but we will enlist those which most often appear as information sources for today’s popular university rankings.

UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) is a centralised system of collecting applications to all undergraduate courses in the UK.  The statistical data of collected applications released by the UCAS can be treated as a popularity rating of a higher education institution (HEI) and particular subjects as well as national and regional priorities.

Official website is www.ucas.com

The National Student Survey (NSS) is a survey run among all graduates of higher education institutions in the UK. It aims at obtaining students’ feedback on the quality of studied courses and overall operation of the institution.  The questionnaire consists of six parts: Teaching, Assessment & Feedback, Academic Support, Organisation & Management, Learning Resources, Personal Development, and Overall Satisfaction question.

Official website is: www.thestudentsurvey.com and the results are represented at www.unistats.com.

Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is a research held every four years by the UK body responsible for state funding spread and control over its effective spend by universities. This factor plays an absolutely important role in the UK higher education sector due to the fact that the essential part of scientific research is university-based in this country.  Funding of research at higher education institutions depends on the institution’s results evaluated by the RAE; that is why it has a significant impact on HEIs work.  Last research was conducted in late 2008; its results have been published and are available at www.rae.ac.uk.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) is the central agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about higher education in the UK. Official website is: http://www.hesa.ac.uk.

Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) is a statistical research conducted by the HESA and aimed at providing insight into the activity of the UK’s graduates over 6 months after the graduation (professional employment and continuation of study are among of the others). More detailed information is available here.

The information collected, processed and provided by all these institutions serves an important goal set by the British government to create various, multi-sided, and at the same time solid education system and make the entire processes utmost transparent.
