On the fourth of March 2013 it was announced that a new scholarship program for Masters in global mental health has been established at on the King’s College London. The scholarships will be awarded during next academic year prioritising applicants from low and middle income countries. King’s College London is one of the world’s top 30 universities in the UK.

Open to graduates from anywhere in the world, the programme is a one-year Masters course in the study of global mental health research, policy and practice. It is designed to prepare its students for careers in mental health policy, epidemiological and mental health services research, and as mental health advisors and advocates in government ministries, international agencies and non-governmental organisations.

There will be a total of nine fully funded scholarships awarded. Three scholarships will be given per academic year. Professor Martin Prince of the department said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer nine, fully-funded scholarships for our MSc in Global Mental Health. There is a desperate need for professional training and research to manage the mental health needs of populations in low and middle income countries. A key focus of the MSc has always been on building local expertise to devise locally appropriate and feasible strategies to reduce the burden of mental health disorders.”

The money was kindly provided by the Janssen Pharmaceutica, NV global ‘Healthy Minds’ programme. The scholarships will cover tuition, room and board, transport, books, daily expenses and international travel to London. King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have been awarded so far a total £295,335 by Janssen Pharmaceutica.
